Chorale motet for mixed chorus a cappella
In his latest motet creation, Christian Ridil's masterful handling of polyphonic structures is once again evident. Thus, the cantus firmus of the well-known chorale O Heiland, reiß die Himmel auf verse by verse, wanders naturally through the parts, while the other parts let the text entwine around it, closed or dissected in set pieces.
Here, the counterpoint of the classical motet style from the Golden Age is transferred into modernity with impressive creative power in the form of strict linearity and the resulting vertical friction, sometimes reaching to the point of abruptness. The development of the Dorian mode of the chorale follows an interesting key and modulation plan.
Above all, in its extraordinary wealth of ideas and the skilful execution of the text in the polyphonic structure, this wonderful choral work can compete in every respect with corresponding adaptations by Distler or Pepping and represents a significant contribution to contemporary sacred choral music.
