The popular melody of the popular folk song by Johann Friedrich Reichardt does not appear in this version of Christian Ridil, rather the composer distributes the 3 verses of the text to a three-part "Lieder" cycle, each with a completely different character. The vocal part spreads melodically free-floating over the polyphonic piano accompaniment, whose vocal structure is further condensed from song to song respective from verse to verse. The ingenuity, especially with regard to the contrast between the strictly contrapuntal structure in the accompaniment and the free development of the vocal part, makes this composition an important contribution to the "Lied" repertoire of our time.
