Tröstet, tröstet, spricht der Herr

For brass and parish ad libitum

(SW1027)

Instrumentation: 4 trumpets in C – tenor horn in C – 3 trombones; Duration: 8 minutes

An introduction is followed by three verses of the severe, modal Advent chorale called “Tröstet, Tröstet”, spricht der Herr, composed by H. F. Micheelsen in the tradition of the german Liturgische Bewegung, in different settings, each connected by polyphonically structured interludes feeded by motivical an thematical materials of the choral these lead to the several choral verses by wonderful smooth settings in a very organic and artistic way. The chorale verses can also be sung along by the parish ad libitum, depending on the possibilities and circumstances at the performance location.

How lively and awake the whole composition is in its counterpointal facture will be particularly evident at the end, when the chorale vers, O Heiland, reiß die Himmel auf, appears in the bass as if it were the most natural thing.
